Social Ministry Opportunities
Please keep your eyes, ears and hearts open to the many, many opportunities to serve our sisters and brothers in Christ, here in our community and around the globe.
- We prepare and serve supper at Central Iowa Shelter & Services (formerly known as Churches United) on the 18th & 19th of every month. Recipes are provided by the sign-up sheets in the narthex just in case you're not accustomed to quantity cooking! (Last month the residents gave our St. John's crew a standing ovation after the meal, proclaiming it worthy of a 5-star rating!)
- We serve a meal for Homeless Youth Outreach the second Thursday of every month. Cathy Talcott cooks, but more servers are needed. The sign-up sheet is also in the narthex.
- Watch for the opportunity to provide Christmas gifts for the families of people who are incarcerated through the Angel Tree project. A Christmas tree with tags describing gifts needed will be up after Thanksgiving... And mittens & hats for children & adults in our community are needed for the Mitten Tree Project. These are distributed to a number of helping agencies and some local schools.
- And monetary gifts to the World Hunger Appeal of the ELCA and/or Lutheran World Relief help feed, clothe, educate and provide health care to brothers and sisters around the globe.
- Tutors are needed for the tutoring we offer on Wednesday evenings (6:30-7:30) for the kids from Oakridge Neighborhood Services. The kids bring work to do, so there is no preparation involved. All you need is a desire to make a connection with an elementary aged child once a week!!! If interested, please contact Sheryl Reed 243-7691 ext. 193 or sherylreed@stjohnsdsm.org.
