Meditation: May 6, 2007
" Then he said to me, 'It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from
the spring of the water of life.' "
Revelation 21:6
Reflection: Is he crying tears? Is
his mouth moist? When was his last wet diaper? Dehydration was a serious
concern for our sick, vomiting baby. We kept a diligent watch for these
characteristics, and our son's body did retain enough fluids to avoid a trip
to the emergency room.
Water. It is necessary for life. Without it, we die.
I certainly experience bodily thirst. After exercising, I need water to
rehydrate. When I've been working without a break, my body reminds me to
take a drink. When I've not been allowed any food or beverage for hours and
hours before a medical procedure, my parched throat is nearly unbearable.
Aside from my body, I am thirsty. I long for healing, assurance,
forgiveness, acceptance, peace. My restless soul at times pursues wholeness
in ways that do not satisfy.
In John's revelation, Jesus invites all of us to his kingdom. It is
complete. It is here now. It is forever. It will satisfy. The water he
offers quenches our spiritual thirst.
Prayer: We are thirsty, Lord. Guide
us to your "spring of the water of life." Amen
Question of
the Week: How do I pay attention to my spiritual thirst?
