My cousin Barbie hid her hands
behind her back. "Which hand do you
want?" she asked. I knew one hand
held a stick of Dentyne gum and the
other held. . . nothing. As the
child of a dentist, I never had gum
at home. This was a chance to win a
rare treat. But which hand held the
treasure? Not knowing, I had to
decide between left and right.
Barbie's face and behavior offered
no clue. God, too, offers us a
choice: fire or water, life or
death. We are not forced to choose
one over the other. This choice is
ours. But unlike my quandary as a
child, this situation offers
consequences we can clearly see.
